The ‘Sport Walk Five A Day’ is quite simple – walk a minimum of 5km every day for a month.
All you need to do is to go out walking every day for at least 5km or approximately 3 miles for the whole month. You can run some of these sessions if you wish but make sure they’re all conducted on foot – riding a bike or a horse for 5km won’t count! If you work in miles, you can either think of it as ‘Three A Day’ or do five miles a day if that’s within your scope, it’s up to you.
Now, for seasoned Sport Walkers, this might not seem like a lot but it is in fact a really good challenge for building consistency. By walking a relatively short distance every day (so you’re less likely to overtrain), you’re programming yourself to be consistent and to focus on frequent activity (which is the most effective method) rather than on big intermittent efforts over long distances.
For those on a Get Fit Walking or fitness focused walking schedule, the Sport Walk Five A Day Challenge represents a targeted boost in distance each week and it builds challenge into your day to day walking.
It’s best to think of the Five A Day Challenge as more of a training aid than a typical personal challenge and if you’re already successfully holding down a consistent Sport Walking training plan, you can still perform your regular planned sessions on the days you’d normally train but then just add in 5k ‘recovery’ walks on your ‘off days’, at a far more relaxed and easy pace.
